What is this site ?
A guide on a trek along the southern coast of the Peloponnese. The guide is divided into independent stages of a few hours.
Who am I ?
A french traveller, who did this trip in 2022.
Why did I create this site ?
First, to answer a few questions I asked myself before starting this trek:
– Is this area worth a trip ?
– Are there hiking trails around ?
– Why are there so few resources on the web about such a trek ?
– Is it easy to find available accomodation ?
Is this area worth a trip ?
Definitely ! The south of the Peloponnese has many interests: breathtaking panoramas combining sea and mountains, authentic villages, a rich regional gastronomy, tourist infrastructures but away from the most crowded destinations of the country …
Are there hiking trails around ?
In Greece, marked, mapped and maintained hiking trails are rare. The Peloponnese is no exception. The center of the Peninsula has the “Menalon Trail”, a perfectly documented 75 km route, especially through this website. In the south, the Kardamyli area has some marked trails on the flanks of the Taygetus.
However, hiking is possible there, especially because:
– the area is full of paths and tracks, in particular to allow owners of olive groves to access their land
– the villages, often sparsely populated, are connected by roads with little traffic, compatible with the wandering of hikers
Why are there so few resources on the web about such a trek ?
As there are few clearly marked hiking trails in the area, few hikers venture on a multi-day trek.
Is it easy to find available accomodation ?
I did this trek during the shoulder season, between September and October. I didn’t have a tent, I found available accommodation quite easily (room to rent, apartment, hotel room …). I have sometimes booked the day before or the same morning, except in tourist towns where it is easy to find a solution on arrival.
There are few campsites, wild camping is prohibited in Greece.
What does contain this website ?
Essentially :
– suggestions for hiking routes lasting a few hours, between two stopover villages where you should be able to spend the night
– information about every stopover village
