« So the sailors of Vitylo, stretched out in the port like those lazzaroni who need hours to rest after a few minutes’ work, got up when they saw one of their caloyers descend rapidly towards the village, waving his arms. »
– Jules Verne, The Archipelago on Fire
Oitylo (Οίτυλο) is an old village of stone houses established on a promontory which dominates the bay of the same name. Its history is old since Homer mentions this city in the Iliad, under the name of Œtylos. The Ottoman citadel of Kelafa is established on a rocky outcrop facing it.
At the foot of the promontory, on the edge of the bay, the village of Neo Oitylo (Νέο Οίτυλο) has a few restaurants and accommodation solutions.
