Gerolimenas – Porto Kagio

This hike takes you from Gerolimenas (Γερολιμένας, pronounced “Yerolimenas”) to Porto Kagio (Πόρτο Κάγιο, “Porto Kayo”) in around 3.5 hours. It is mainly done on the road, and yet it is a magnificent ride that will make you discover in particular the coves of Almirou and Sarolimeni, the charming port of Kyparissos and the surprising ghost village of Vathia. After Vathia, the panorama of the coast and the mountains gets splendid. The only difficulty is the climb to Vathia.

Exit Gerolimenas (Γερολιμένας) by the east. Take the small road going east, which quickly reaches the main road. After a left curve, the road gradually rises to the village of Alika.

Alika (Άλικα), 30 min from Gerolimenas. Some accommodation and restaurants.
Cross the village, then at the crossroads in the center of the village, follow the sign indicating Vathia and Porto Kagio. 100 m after the crossroads, take the path on the right which is pointed out by a signpost dedicated to hikers. The pretty path, surrounded by dry stone walls, goes down to the bed of the dry river which leads to the white shingle beach of Almirou. Climb the hill opposite via the path that continues, bypassing the remains of the ancient city of Kainepolis (Καινήπολις). You arrive at a small dead-end road which you take to the right. The road ends, then you go on by the trail which leads you to the pretty little port of Kyparissos.

Kyparissos (Κυπάρισσος), 30 min from Alika. Some hosting solutions.
Go around the cove by the beach, and reach the small road on the other side of the port. It brings you back to the main road. On your right, you will not miss the magnificent cove of Sarolimeni. You can go down there by a path on the right. Another trail goes up to the main road starting on the left of the creek, but it crosses the property of a hotel. Continue on the main road. A few hundred meters further on, your eye will surely be drawn to the magnificent beach of Exo Kapi and the towers of the village of Vathia. Then the road rises rapidly towards Vathia (200 m drop over 2 km). Shortly before the village, a path that goes to the left makes it possible to shorten a bit the climb. Then you arrive at Vathia, which is worth a visit.

Vathia (Βάθεια), 1 h from Kyparissos. Limited accommodation solutions and restaurants, depending on the season.
Continue on the main road which offers fabulous views until the end of the hike. After a long descent, you reach a fork, turn right towards the isthmus of Cape Matapan. 400 m further on, turn left for Porto Kagio, or right for Kokkinogia or Marmari, which you have overlooked for a few minutes.

Porto Kagio (Πόρτο Κάγιο), 1 h from Vathia.
On the Cap Matapan peninsula, accommodation solutions are not very few and more expensive than average. There is also no grocery store or camping even nearby. Three places are available to put down your bag and find a bed: 1. Porto Kagio (Πόρτο Κάγιο). Small village nestled in a peaceful, magnificent bay. Some accommodation solutions and restaurants 2. Marmari (Μαρμάρι). Large and beautiful beach, beautiful sunset. A single hotel that also has a restaurant 3. Kokkinogia (Κοκκινόγεια), near Cape Matapan. If you are tempted to feel at the end of the world and explore the gates of Hell at nightfall… A tavern and an establishment that rents rooms
